Foundation’s Firefighters On Your Side Launches Filipino Fire Safety Campaign

The California Fire Foundation (CFF) today unveils two public service announcements (PSAs) that will help educate the Filipino community on fire safety and steps to take in the event of a house fire. The PSAs will also provide tips on how to avoid the most common causes of home fires and ensure the safety of families all year-round.

Produced as part of the Foundation’s Firefighter’s On Your Side program, the PSAs are part of a statewide initiative that aims to educate traditionally underserved communities throughout California.  The PSAs feature local Filipino firefighters and tips in Tagalog to ensure direct communication with the Filipino community.

“Because firefighters live and work in the communities we serve, your family is like our family,” said Lou Paulson, chair of the California Fire Foundation. “In working with local Filipino organizations and communicating in a way that resonates with the community, we hope to overcome language barriers and enhance awareness of critical fire safety messages. We believe these materials will save lives.”

The PSAs are currently focused in the Bay Area and San Diego, which are home to some of the largest Filipino communities in California and the nation.

“The Filipino community is susceptible to fires just as much as any other community, but with these PSAs we now have another tool to help the Filipino community be safe and be aware,” said Daly City Fire Captain, Phil E. Cortijos. “With this campaign, we hope to let the community know we are here to help protect their families and can be reached in Tagalog anytime.”

Safety tips highlighted in the materials include:

  • Never leaving cooking equipment unattended;
  • Keeping a lid ready for any fire that may occur while cooking;
  • Do not ever use water to put out grease fires;
  • Moving candles at least 1 foot away from anything that can burn;
  • Checking smoke detectors regularly;
  • Preparing an exit strategy with your family.

“As a Philippine born native, I understand firsthand the needs and concerns of the Filipino community. This PSA will help in creating a discussion in Filipino households about what is safe to do and how to plan ahead in case of a fire,” said Daly City Mayor Ray Buenaventura.  “These important safety tips will not only keep families safe from preventable fires, but also build a relationship of trust between Firefighters and the Filipino community.  Firefighters are here to protect us and keep our families safe from fire.”
